Dr. Shook has explored various orientations throughout his career, including Humanistic, Existential, Gestalt, Jungian, Object-Relations, and Ericksonian Hypnosis, He integrates mindfulness and acceptance principles into his practice, with a special focus on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. He has also completed training in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR).
During his residency at the University of Virginia Health Sciences Center, Dr. Shook underwent training in the departments of Child and Family Psychiatry, Adult Psychiatry, Neuropsychology, and Pain Management. He completed Fellowship in Pain Management at the same institution, in the Department of Anesthesiology at UVA.
Dr. Shook's expertise extends to forensic cases, where he has provided expert testimony on competency and insanity pleas.
Since being a medic in the Air Force, Dr. Shook has a longstanding interest in mind-body interventions. At the UVA Health Sciences Center, he focused on the power of hypnosis and meditation, working extensively in the burn unit, spinal cord injury unit, and oncology department.
Dr. Shook began formal meditation practice during high school. His work in psychotherapy and health psychology has highlighted the innate self-healing and self-regulating capacities within individuals.
Continuing his professional development, Dr. Shook actively engages in workshops, including studying with experts such as Steven Hayes and attending a six-day retreat with Thich Naht Hanh. He also had the privilege of studying Nonviolent Communication with Marshall Rosenberg.
With extensive experience in group and individual interventions, Dr. Shook works with clients of all ages, ranging from six-year-old children to adolescents and adults. His dedication to psychology and helping others remains unwavering.
