The goals of many colleges and universities can seem almost interchangeable, just barely distinguishing one from another. That's not so much a bad thing; it just means they do and offer the same things.
Life University is different. We hold particular philosophies "about education and human performance " that create an uncommon university experience. Because ours is not a "plain vanilla" approach, we want you to understand who we are so you can decide if your goals and the Life experience are a good fit. If they are, you're in for an exciting and life-stretching couple of years.
Life University faculty, students and staff share a strong respect for the wonders of the human body. Our vitalistic philosophy recognizes the inborn healing abilities of the body and the inner wisdom that regulates it in a state of health. Interestingly, this philosophy doesn't show up only in our health care majors. It manifests itself throughout the curriculum and even in our administrative decisions. In fact, our commitment to true health is actually what prompted us to become one of the first 100 universities in the nation to join the American College & University Presidents Climate Commitment to address global warming.
We admire the inner-directed life that respects the unique qualities of each individual and nurtures mutually healthy relationships. We expect and foster personal responsibility and integrity so that each of us takes ownership of our decisions and their impact on others. We see our personal relationships, our campus community and our world as an interconnected web that can advance personal and community health and peak performance for all aspects of our society.
A natural extension of our respect for the inner workings of each person and the interconnectedness of our world is a desire to make that world a better place. Life students are typically highly motivated to help others. Whether they will become chiropractors, dietitians, psychologists, or sport health scientists caring for patients, or if they will emerge as business or technology leaders providing ethical and inspiring direction, our students strive to be the change they want to see in the world.
Not everyone has that passion. It's something you feel more in your gut than in your head, but it takes both. We believe our students should develop top-notch skills in their field so they can apply them at the highest levels to create personal success and serve the needs of their fellow human beings. Little could be more rewarding than stretching to fully develop your talents and combining them with the passion to make a difference.
Of course, our students do not come to Life as mature leaders. They come with a spark. Through rigorous coursework, extensive mentoring and almost relentless, hands-on and life-changing experiences, that spark grows into the brightly burning flame of competence, inspiration and opportunity.
Interwoven throughout the curriculum of all Life students are our Eight Core Proficiencies (what we call Eight Ways to Great) that facilitate their development as people who can conceptualize change and figure out how to put it into action. Seminars and coursework on topics such as Learning Theory and Critical Thinking, Communication and Relationship Theory and Skills, Leadership and Entrepreneurship, Contemporary Scientific Paradigms, Belief Systems and Performance, and Integrative Change provide a strong foundation for professional success, social contribution and cultural change.
This is not your standard university, but rather a place to nurture unusual men and women who want the exceptional and are willing to work for it. Life is the right place for highly motivated people who see their professional success as not only a vehicle for personal satisfaction and material rewards, but as a pathway to quenching their need to make a difference in the world around them. It's for people who want to live the extraordinary.
